Beijing

Literally meaning the northern capital, Beijing is not only the political, cultural and educational center of China, but holds the biggest collection of historical sites in the country.

As you fly into the city, the Great Wall, the only architecture ever built on Earth that can be seen from the outer space, is right down below like a dancing dragon along the mountain ridges. Seen from above, other city sites gradually appear, well ordered and arranged in a grid, in keeping with the principles of Feng Shui.

The sheer size of the city is reflected at almost every level. The magnificent Forbidden City and the world biggest Tiananmen Square all add to the felling and atmosphere that Beijing is, and always has been, a city of political and cultural importance. Home to over 1000 years of imperial rule, and now the hub of modern China's political system, Beijing has a lot to offer.

For any visitors to this modern capital, a trip to the major historical sites is a must. But it's absolutely worth getting to know Brijing a little deeper than this. Take some time and make the effort to explore the sites that are less well known. The Hutongs, the small windy alleyways between the city's main boulevards are delightful. Taking a stroll here, you'll experience the authentic parts of the city and really get to know the traditional life style that old Beijingers still stick to.

With the surprising economic growth, Beijing has become one of the world's leading metropolises with restaurants, shopping malls and bars, just to ensure you not to find boring when you want to slow down a little bit during your tour.

The 2008 Olympic Games will be held here, and Beijing is now busy getting ready for this great event, as it is the first time for China to host the Olympic Games.
