Nanjing

Nanjing, formerly spelt as Nanking and meaning the southern capital, is one of the six ancient capitals of China. Situated at the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, it is now the capital city of Jiangsu Province, with an area of 860 square km and a population of more than 5 million.

Nanjing became the capital of the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644. Dr. Sun Yat-sen also chose it as the capital for the Republic of China in the early 20th century. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum and the Ming Tombs are the most attractive historical sites in this city.

Although Nanjing is developing and changing like any other cuties in China, it is a nice place to stay for a while. Life is much slower here than that of the neighboring Shanghai, which is quite a phenomenon.
