Reed Flute
Cave
Reed Flute Cave is near the Peach
Blossom River in the North-west of Guilin. The
main shopping part of the city is about 7km away.
The cave gets its name from the reeds that grow
near the cave being used to make flutes. The cave
takes about an hour to explore. It is said to
be the most famous cave in all of China.
The stalactites and stalagmites are part of many
unusual rock formations These are illuminated
by coloured lights along the U shaped route that
visitors follow. Parts of the rock are given names
dating back to local stories and their resemblance
to other things found in nature.
There are more than 70 inscriptions
written in ink in the cave, which date back to
792 AD during the Tang Dynasty. The cave opened
to the public in 1962 and has since been visited
by millions of guests.
